Michael is an excellent and highly reliable guy, building a great product. It's a fantastic amp, and I tried many before settling on it. 6L6 kills the tone, as does a 5881 or E元4, even though it can take all of those. It's a 20 watt amp, it's not meant to be a 100 watts. Having tried a range of tubes, I think it sounds best with the 6V6 power tube (I really like the tone from the Raytheon and the Electroharmonix). I read somewhere that an Amperex Bugle Boy 12AX7 in V1 is supposed to work some magic. The new Electroharmonix are reliable and sound great. Tung Sol tubes sound great but Michael advises against using them as they red plate too easily. Michael uses them as they don't red plate, and he has to ship a product that's not going to crap out due to a lousy power tube. I don't like the tone from JJ's, as reliable as they are I find them stale sounding. I'm not concerned with the drop in volume over the GZ34 as I don't play out, and if I did, I'd just change the tube. I'm currently running NOS Raytheon 6V6 and 12AX7's, and I think I've got a 5Y3 in it. I've played one with the speaker that you've got, and I prefer the Gold.
